Born in Rome, Georgia in 1946, David Eugene Henry originally studied architecture before moving on to the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris where he discovered his passion for art. He went on to study under a number of famous artists around the world including American painter Philip Pearlstien. In the early 70’s, David received three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been featured in collections in many museums and art institutions including the Albany Museum of Art, the Louisiana State Museum, and Huntsville Museum. We originally saw a piece similar to this at David’s home but he wouldn’t sell it. Much to our surprise, he completed this new piece in the same style as the one we had seen, but in a much much larger scale and in a gray wood frame David constructed himself. It’s absolutely magnificent in scale and contrast. David’s striking use of black and white with crisp and clean edges draws the viewer deep into the details. David said he was inspired by Tall Alice Looking Down the Rabbit Hole. We can see it. He also says this piece is meant to be hung horizontally or vertically and it is signed in both directions. This work is Too fantastic and it’s going to be hard for us to part with, however, art is meant to be shared and we’ll enjoy it while it’s with us. Other works of David’s are available at galleries selling for $7500+, but none are as large and dramatic as this piece.
